5. Anselm Feuerbach, Portrait of His Mother (n.d.)

6. Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Bildnis des Malers Lyonel Feininger (Portrait of the Painter Lyonel Feininger), 1915.  Like his colleagues of the Dresden artists’ association known as “Brücke” (Bridge) or like the Cubists in Paris, Schmidt-Rottluff drew inspiration from African tribal art

7. Otto Müller,  Stehende Zigeunerkinder (Standing Gypsy Children),  ca. 1926-28.

 8.  Max Uhlig, Bildnissstudie in Rot A.S.  (Portrait Study in Red A.S.), 1989

9.  Gerhard Marcks, Kleiner Odi (Little Odi), 1975

10.  Gerhard Marcks, Amazone, sich wendend (Amazon, Turning), 1969

 NAZI ART

11.Adolf Reich, Robbed of House and Farmstead, 1940.  The title of the painting suggests that a peasant couple seated in a notary’s office in Austira is being robbed of everything they own.  The two men coazing the farmer into signing the contract correspond to the hateful anti-Semitic image of the deceitful Jew.  The 1934 calendar indicates that the scene is set before the annexation of Auastria by the Nazis.

Detail below: The Jew hides behind his hat as he eagerly looks to see the signature on the document finalized.

 12. Adolf Ziegler, Nude, 1942.  Nazi Art celebrated the naked body, and particular the naked body of what they called the Aryan race.  This is academic realism as propaganda:  the racial ideal in the nude, a mixture of Classicism with a contemporary type.
